The Cincinnati Swords were a professional hockey team that began operations in 1971. The team would compete in the American Hockey League and use Cincinnati Gardens for its home games. The Swords were actually owned by the Buffalo Sabres which naturally made them an affiliate of the bigger NHL team. They made the playoffs in their first season and were extremely popular with the city. Despite their popularity, Cincinnati received an expansion franchise from a different league in 1974, and Sabres ownership decided to dissolve the team after the 1974 season.
