He opened the restaurant in 1933, a couple of months before Repeal, and for the next 37 years it was the Quaker City’s sporting hub: thick sirloins, cheap whiskey, Bert Bell running the NFL from a table, and enough bookmakers that a 1944 report to the baseball commissioner called it the gamblers’ payoff joint.
