Alabama, the Home of Southern Hospitality

It took all our willpower not to start this paragraph with the chorus from that famous song about Alabama—you know the one. We will mention the band Alabama, though, since they're easily in our top three musical acts named after states (along with Kansas and Flo Rida, of course). 

The state may be a boring rectangle shape, but there's more to it than meets the eye. Even though it's mostly landlocked, you'll hear "roll tide!" everywhere you go in the 205. 

The Heart of Dixie, home to the Civil Rights Movement, has a history as old as America itself. And when it comes to partying, move over Louisiana—Alabama even has the country's oldest Mardi Gras celebration, first held in 1703.

Alabamians are proud of who they are, and that's why we love them.

Not Just a Football State

Sure, you're probably familiar with the Alabama Crimson Tide. If you're not from Alabama, your team has probably lost to them. A bunch. 

While Alabama football and the Rammer Jammer are great, the state boasts a whole lot of other sports culture, too. There's a storied history built on great teams like the Birmingham Americans, the Alabama Slammers, and the Huntsville Channel Cats. 

Outside of football, it's the home to some of the greats in baseball, racing, and athletics. Bet you didn't know Jesse Owens, the first American to win four gold medals at a single Olympics, was from Alabama. Or how about Bobby Allison, who won the Daytona 500 three times? 

Alabamians love their hockey, too. The Birmingham Bulls were an ice hockey team back in the 70s and 80s and recently came back to play in Pelham. And if hockey's too cold for your southern blood, check out the professional soccer team in Mobile. 

Alabama Knows how to Cook

There's always a hot debate over which state makes the best barbeque, but our money's on Alabama. There's nothing like pork grilled over hickory, along with some famous Alabama white sauce. 

If you've got a nut allergy, you may want to be careful—Alabama is home to the town known as the "peanut capital of the world"! Fun fact: the state is one of the largest producers of peanuts in America. 

Don't forget about the pizza, either. Some even go so far as to call Alabama the pizza state. Pair it with an ice-cold beer, and now you're drinking like an Alabamian.
