The Mitten State Welcomes You!

Home to more than 11,000 inland lakes, Michigan is aptly called The Great Lakes State. The country’s 26th state also goes by other popular nicknames: The Wolverine State and The Mitten State. Though known by several names, each carries a significant meaning.

Michiganders are used to being near a body of water. In fact, wherever you reside, you’re never more than six miles from an inland lake or more than 85 miles from a Great Lake. That's because four of the Great Lakes share borders with Michigan: Superior, Huron, Michigan, and Erie. No wonder it earned the nickname “Great Lakes!”

Michigan’s long-standing rivalry with Ohio over the Toledo Strip may have also inspired its other nickname, Wolverine. It’s said that because of the land dispute, people from Ohio referred to Michiganders as “wolverines.”

Even the “Mitten State” nickname has its own story. Some argue that it originally referred to Wisconsin, a neighboring state resembling a mitten's shape. But since they’re side-by-side, Wisconsin and Michigan can simply agree to be the left and right mittens even without the other’s express permission!

Speaking of landforms, Michigan is also the only US state split into the Upper Peninsula or UP (where the Yoopers reside) and the Lower Peninsula or the Mitten (where the Trolls live). The five-mile-long Mackinac Bridge connects them.

Whether you grew up with 313 as your area code, as long as you call Michigan home, you can proudly rep your favorite state with our Michigan shirts and tank tops! There are countless styles and colors to choose from, so you can share them with the whole family!

Sports Fanatics Through and Through

The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio is even more intense on the playing field. “The Game,” known by loyal followers, is an annual competition between the two states’ college football teams, the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Many popular sports teams hail from Michigan, and several have changed their names or locations over the years. The state’s notable football teams include the Michigan Panthers, the Detroit Fury, and the legendary Detroit Drive.

You may have seen a game or two of Michigan's homegrown teams if you love hockey. But if you, your friends, or your family members are long-time hockey fanatics, you’ll surely recognize the classic teams in our collection!

We have the Michigan Stags (now known as the Baltimore Blades) and Detroit-based hockey teams such as the Detroit Falcons (a.k.a. The Michigan Falcons), the Motor City Mechanics, and the Motor City Mustangs.

Our collection also features hockey teams from other parts of the state, including the Beacons and Border Cats from Port Huron, the Saginaw Gears and Lumber Kings, the Muskegon Fury, and the Flint Bulldogs and Flint Generals (which became the Saginaw Generals).

Soccer fans can shop and wear graphic t-shirts that feature their favorite team. Choose from popular Detroit teams like the Detroit Neon (a.k.a. the Detroit Safari), the Rockers, the Cougars, the Detroit Lightning, or the Kalamazoo Kangaroos.

From Motor Town to Tree Town

This is for you if you are eager to discover more about Michigan. Make sure to spend some time visiting Detroit and Grand Rapids. And if you’re feeling it, drop by East Lansing and Ann Arbor, too!

The automobile capital of the world and the land of Motown music, Detroit produced some of the best inventions in history. It’s known as the Motor City because it’s where Henry Ford built his first car in 1896 and where he devised the moving assembly line. Motown Records was founded in Detroit in 1959, and they introduced iconic musicians to the world, including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.

Grand Rapids is known as America’s Furniture Capital because it’s where carpenters, woodworkers, and artisans set up shop during the lumber boom of the 1880s. It’s also dubbed by USA Today as the Craft Beverage Capital of the US. So if you’re searching for a remarkable drinking experience, grab a friend, sort through your choices, and find the perfect spot in Grand Rapids!

East Lansing is the site of Michigan State University, a pioneer land-grant school founded in 1855. This is your sign to explore a new city—East Lansing offers art experiences, interactive activities, and a laid-back brewery you can enjoy alone or with a group.

Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan. Aside from being a university town, the city is also a hub for high technology. Ann Arbor is called the “Tree Town,” an ode to the expansive greenery duplicated around the city.
