Everything is bigger and better in Texas, and that includes being a sports fan. Austin may not have one of the big four sports franchises, but what it lacks in pro-sports, it more than makes up for in college sports. This city rallies behind the Longhorns with passion and dedication few other college towns can aspire to.

Sports Culture in Austin

When you’re talking about sports in Austin, you’re talking about the University of Texas at Austin’s athletics department. The city is coated in that signature burnt orange. The University of Texas has collected 56 total national championships, 47 of which are NCAA titles, and are a playoff contender across games and men’s and women’s athletics.

The football team has 900 victories under its belt, ranking third in all-time NCAA wins. They regularly pack the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, with over 100,000 attendees. If you’re an Oklahoma, Texas A&M, or Texas Tech fan, you may have experienced a few heartbreaks in that stadium at the hands of the Longhorns and their beloved mascot, Bevo.

Bevo is a local legend, first arriving on the scene to moo-tivate the players in 1916. Since then there have been fifteen Bevos, all with that signature white and burnt orange coat. Long may he reign.

Austin’s Sports City Limits 

We’d be remiss not to mention Austin’s professional soccer club, Austin FC. The team is brand new, playing its first season in 2021, so it still has some building to do to reach Longhorn-level love, but we’re sure they’ll get there.

Before Austin FC, the city never had a claim to a pro sports team. The closest they got was a minor league hockey team called the Austin Ice Bats, who played from 1996 to 2008. The team was affiliated with the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the AHL's Houston Aeros.

The lack of professional sports teams was something of an anomaly, actually. Before Austin FC moved in, the city was the largest metropolis in the nation without a pro sports team.
