You know that feeling when you walk towards the cross streets of Addison and Clark? That energy in the air? The smell of a hot dog wafting around? That’s the magic of Chicago. With longstanding legacy teams and an impressively devoted fanbase, Chicago is one of the great American sports cities.

Chicago Sports Culture 

If there’s one thing Chicago fans do well, it’s loyalty. Chicagoans stand by their many teams through thick and thin. Here’s the rundown: Chicago is home to the NFL’s Chicago Bears, the MLB’s Chicago Cubs and White Sox, the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks, the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, and the MLS’s Chicago Fire FC, all of which have won championships.

Sure the Chicago Cubs may have suffered through a bit of a drought there — a 108-year drought, that is — but the franchise more than made up for it with the World Series win in 2016. If you can believe it, the Cubs have been playing ball since 1876 as a founding team of the National League. Now that’s legacy.

The Bears have had their own drought. Their last Super Bowl win was in 1985, but many can remember a time when the Bears were the team to beat, and if that’s good enough for Chicagoans, it’s good enough for us.

A true highlight on the Chicago roster is the Black Hawks. The team has won 16 division championships and six Stanley Cups. They’ve been tearing up the ice for almost 100 years.

And then there are the Bulls: The GOAT. Six rings. Need we say more?

All in all, Chicago fans have ridden highs and lows over the last hundred years and have done so with dedication we always admire.

Looking in Chicago’s Rearview Mirror 

Some Chicago teams have lacked these franchise’s staying power. Remember the USFL in the ’80s? The Chicago Blitz played at Soldier Field. Before the Arizona Cardinals threw touchdowns among the cacti, they were the Chicago Cardinals from 1920 to 1959. The Cardinals and the Bears are the only remaining founding teams from the first days of the NFL.

Sports Almanac nerds will remember the Chicago Whales, a pro baseball team from 1914 that played in the Federal League, a short-lived "third Major League.”
