The Motor City Mechanics were a minor league ice hockey team that competed in the United Hockey League. The team began playing in 2004 and used the Great Lakes Sports City Superior Arena in Fraser, Michigan as their home ice. During their first year of operation, the Mechanics were actually the only professional hockey team playing in Detroit due to the NHL lockout at the time. The Mechanics actually signed three Detroit Red Wings players at the time. Despite the NHL player signings, the team would not play much better than .500 hockey, and ownership would look to relocate after the 2006 season before eventually deciding to sell the team.
