It would take several years for the Tampa Bay Lightning to find their permanent home arena after joining the NHL in 1992. During their inaugural season, games were held at Expo Hall at the Florida State Fair Grounds. With a seating capacity of just over 10k, it was much too small. By their sophomore season, Tropicana Field was turned into the Thunderdome which greatly improved their seating capacity. In 1996 they even broke the NHL attendance record at the time with 28,183 fans for game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

As a promotional event at Comiskey Park on July 12th 1979, White Sox promotion manager Mike Veeck (Bill's son) dreamed up the event which took place in-between games of a double header with the Detroit Tigers. Fans brought in disco records in exchange for a ticket price of $0.98. Dahl and a crew then destroyed a pile of records, tearing a hole in center field, and causing thousands of fans to storm the field. In total the event drew an estimated 70,000 rowdy fans.

The infamous Cannonball Loop at Action Park was one of its many wildly unsafe attractions. It was so intimidating that employees had to be offered $100 bonus to test it before the slide could open to the public. Test dummies that were sent down the slide came out the other end dismembered and decapitated. After the ride opened to the public, incidents of injuries like several knocked out teeth caused the ride to shut down after just a month. One of those teeth was found lodged into the interior wall of the slide. A later study found that riders were experiencing as much as 9 g’s of force when going through the loop.

On May 15th 1957, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Hank Bauer, and their wives joined teammate Billy Martin on a night out to celebrate his birthday. Their last stop was the Copacabana nightclub in Manhattan. When Sammy Davis Jr. took the stage as headliner, a drunk bowling team from Washington Heights began to heckle him with epithets.
After having integrated their team two years prior, the Yankees players were keen to stopping this and stepped in asking them to stop. What happened next was unclear for decades, but it ended with a broken jaw and concussion for one of the bowlers. The supposed victim pressed charges and when questioned in the ensuing case, Mickey Mantle explained what may have happened was “I think Roy Rogers rode through the Copa, and Trigger kicked the man in the head” . After the courtroom exploded in laughter, the district attorney would later throw out the case for insufficient evidence.
The outcome of the ordeal was bad press for the Yankees and a mark on the player’s character that would follow some of them through their careers. Today we understand the players more so as heroes for stepping up to abusive clientele for the club.
It wasn’t until June of 2020 that Joey Silvestri, an off-duty doorman of the Copacabana, would come forward with the whole story. He had known the Yankess players from before, and the players did indeed step in, but it was Joey who finished the job with a quick blow to the jaw.
