A throwback to Nates and Leons, the delicatessen Leon Shavitz and Nathan Herr opened on West North Avenue in 1936; corned beef, pickles, and a counter in a Baltimore that still ran on them. In 1950 the partners bought a building out in Pikesville and turned the ground floor into the Pimlico Hotel restaurant, which carried the same kitchen and much of the same crowd for another forty years before closing in 1991. Fifty-five years all told. It started here.
