It is also a major seaport and was previously the second-largest port of entry for immigrants during the 19th and 20th centuries. In fact, the Irish made up 22% of Baltimore’s population back in the late 1800s.

It’s common to find a member of the Baltimore Ravens’ flock hanging with the crowd outside the stadium, tailgating and chowing down on a famous Maryland-style pit beef. It’s ok to indulge in a slice of Baltimore-style pizza, though, if you want to keep it a bit less meaty. They both pair well with a nice cold beer.
Maryland's baseball fans are just as excited about their team as football fans. Camden Yards has been the home of the Baltimore Orioles since 1992, with the historic Baltimore Memorial Stadium closing that same year.
The Ravens and O’s are lucky to get most sports fans’ attention, as they’re the only major league teams in the state. Maryland, however, did have a major league basketball team in the past—the Baltimore Bullets, which played from 1944 to 1954. There was also the Baltimore Claws, a basketball team that only got to play three exhibition games before the 1975 season but never made it to the start of the season due to financial issues.
