The Birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner, Babe Ruth, and the American Railroad

Tucked between Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Atlantic, the Free State has been front and center of America’s innovation throughout history.

Being a proud Maryland native is so easy when you look back at the state’s role in the American Revolution. Maryland's natives helped George Washington push back the British forces during the war for independence and fight for our rights, earning it the nickname “The Old Line State.” Waving the American flag takes on a different meaning in Maryland.

Maryland’s nature is beautiful and bountiful. The Chesapeake Bay—an estuary home to unique creatures like the blue crab and striped bass—has made the state a staple for oysters. It also made the Maryland Skipjack famous, the traditional boat for capturing oysters along the Bay.

Baltimore is the most populous city in Maryland. Monumental City, as it’s called, is the birthplace of sports icons Babe Ruth and Michael Phelps. It is also a major seaport and was previously the second-largest port of entry for immigrants during the 19th and 20th centuries. In fact, the Irish made up 22% of Baltimore’s population back in the late 1800s.

Celebrate Maryland Sports Past and Present

A historical place even when it comes to sports, Maryland is the home to some of the best sports fans.

You'll love our sports-themed Maryland shirts for fanatics who’ve gotta replace their worn-out, out-of-style sports apparel for the new season.

It’s common to find a member of the Baltimore Ravens’ flock hanging with the crowd outside the stadium, tailgating and chowing down on a famous Maryland-style pit beef. It’s ok to indulge in a slice of Baltimore-style pizza, though, if you want to keep it a bit less meaty. They both pair well with a nice cold beer.

Maryland's baseball fans are just as excited about their team as football fans. Camden Yards has been the home of the Baltimore Orioles since 1992, with the historic Baltimore Memorial Stadium closing that same year.

The Ravens and O’s are lucky to get most sports fans’ attention, as they’re the only major league teams in the state. Maryland, however, did have a major league basketball team in the past—the Baltimore Bullets, which played from 1944 to 1954. There was also the Baltimore Claws, a basketball team that only got to play three exhibition games before the 1975 season but never made it to the start of the season due to financial issues.

Maryland Is the Future, and the Future Is Maryland

Don’t let Maryland’s impressive history and love of sports fool you. The state is as much at the forefront of innovation as it was when it built the first railroad line in the U.S.—the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is putting Maryland on the map with its innovative biomedical research. Johns Hopkins Hospital also ranks within the top 10 in the United States for several medical specialties.

Maryland has also become an important hub for the aerospace industry, with some of the most innovative defense and space companies located there.
